Last month I was interviewed for a Bright Future podcast episode (Episode 37), moderated by Michael Bassett, Director, Research Impact, at the Conference Board of Canada (CBoC).

Drawing upon my experience as a Chief Diversity Officer in Canada and the United States, I shared my perspective on a number of topics related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) roles and their evolution.

We explored the evolution of my role as a diversity leader throughout my career and note the challenges that persist today.  I provided advice on the skills and traits to look for when recruiting diversity officers, and offer guidance to candidates considering taking on diversity, equity, and inclusion roles.

Given my 30+ years of experience, I considered this an important and intriguing topic given how DEI roles have changed and have yet to be standardized in different sectors.

Furthermore, since this was done during Black History Month, I also reflected upon research done by the CBoC whereby I was on their research advisory board for the “Levelling the Playing Field for Black Canadians: A Call to Action for Leaders” report.  We also discussed Canada’s ongoing journey to address anti-Black racism and how projects like the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women Initiative helps to spotlight the many contributions of Black leaders.

The podcast episode is about 55 minutes and is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and the Conference Board of Canada website.

What are your thoughts on the evolution of DEI roles?

Let’s share and connect. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
